SP 3: Building Materials Technology

The present subproject focuses on the development and implementation of a concrete encapsulation which was conceptualised within the KaWaTech project. This encapsulation is intended to protect a hydraulic water pumping system against hydro abrasion which is resulting from bed-load discharge. Further, it is planned to develop an appropriate concrete for the construction of gravity channels with less joints which should exhibit a higher reliability against cracking and thus prevent from water losses. Both tasks pursue the concept to use only locally available building materials. Therefore, the subproject substantially contributes to the overall project which aims for developing technical solutions for karst water supply in Vietnam. The main objectives are described in the following:

Activity 1: Pilot implementation of concrete encapsulation

  • Design of a concrete prototype
  • Concreting of sample components with local materials
  • Optimization of the wear testing machine
  • Field test of hydro abrasion resistance
  • Support for pilot implementation

Activity 2: Gravity channels with less joints

  • Classification of damages at hydraulic structures
  • Definition of boundary conditions and requirements
  • Development of an appropriate concrete with local materials
  • Laboratory test of sample components
  • Analysis of multiplication potential
